White Pine, Pinus strobus

This large white pine growing on the Kingsley Park hillside is a familiar sight to all who visit the Reservation, and a popular subject for artists and photographers. White pines were once the tallest trees in the eastern North American forests, some reaching 300 feet in height. Because their strong, straight trunks made excellent masts for sailing ships, all of the tallest ones were cut down during the 1700's.
